Appalachian State (13-10) at UNC Greensboro (5-18)

GAME NOTES: The Spartans of UNC Greensboro try to snap a two-game slide tonight as they entertain the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a Southern Conference showdown in North Carolina.

UNCG, losers of three of the last four, are just 4-8 in league play to this point in the campaign. The squad last took the floor on Saturday and was handed a 77-59 setback by Wofford on the road.

As for the Mountaineers, they are coming off an 89-77 defeat of Western Carolina two days ago, a victory that snapped a two-game slide and pushed the program to 7-4 versus the rest of the SoCon.

With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, ASU leads by a count of 17-15, winning the first meeting this season by a score of 72-64 in Boone.

The offense came alive for the Mountaineers over the weekend, generating a hefty 89 points on an incredible 60 percent shooting from the floor, not to mention 24-of-28 at the free-throw line in the huge victory over Western Carolina. Donald Sims tallied a team-high 29 points, followed by Isaac Butts with 14 and a club-best nine rebounds. Marcus Wright and Josh Hunter chipped in with 10 points each as well. Sims, the leading scorer in six of the last seven outings for the program, is the lone double-digit scorer for the squad after 23 games with his 19.3 ppg, making him one of the most productive scorers in the conference as well. What makes Sims so dangerous is that he has not only made good on 71-of-174 shots behind the three-point line, but he is also one of the nation's most accurate free-throw shooters at an incredible 94.8 percent.

The Spartans went from shooting just 37.9 percent from the field in the first half against Wofford to a mere 30.8 percent after the break, en route to the road loss. The team also struggled out behind the three-point line where they were just 3-of-18. Ben Stywall accounted for 18 points and eight rebounds, while Kyle Randall tacked on 10 points, but did so on a meager 1-of-8 shooting effort from the floor. Just like Appalachian State, UNCG has just a single double-digit scorer in Stywall who is coming up with 14.3 ppg. Stywall accounts for a team-best 10.4 rpg as well, helping to give the squad a slight rebounding edge over the competition. The team as a whole has converted just 37.7 percent from the floor and a measley 27.8 percent out on the perimeter, which is why UNCG is scoring a spartan 63.2 ppg.

Pitting a weak offense against a squad that blew the doors off the competition over the weekend is a match that is destined to give the Mountaineers another win, even on the road.
